PHOENIX, AZ (December 3, 2010) - FC DELCO Development Academy kicked off its 2010/2011 season today at US Soccer’s Winter Showcase at the Reach 11 Sports Complex in Phoenix, AZ. Both the Under-17/18 and Under 15/16 teams saw action against Real Colorado. The Under-17/18 squad, coached by Villanova’s Tom Carlin, earned a point by tying Real 2-2 and the Under-15/16 team, coached by FC DELCO Academy Director Alan Mezger, took all three points with an impressive 1-0 win.
The day started on a chilly but clear early morning in the desert with the 18s up first at 9:00AM. This game was the classic example of a game of two halves. Real came out strong pressing FC DELCO deep into their own half. In the 4th minute, DELCO was dispossessed in the midfield and a quick Real counter off balanced the DC DECLO back line. A quick cross to an open attacker allowed Real to find the back of the net all too easily. FC DELCO seemed unsettled throughout the first half with Real finding the post and crossbar more than a couple of times. Real added to their lead in the 35th minute with a dangerous cross and deft redirected header at the near post. The whistle sounded ending the half and the DELCO coaching staff went to work.
After a couple of adjustments in personnel and tactics FC DELCO came out a different team. As a mirror image of the first half, DELCO came out pressing and forcing turn overs in all areas of the pitch. FC DELCO’s first goal was scored off a clinical header by Robert Friskey with Jimmy McLaughlin getting the assist for providing the service. With DELCO’s flowing attack they always seemed likely to get the equalizer. And, in the 74th minute, they did. McLaughlin scored an unassisted goal from the top of the box after one of his many attacking runs. While the game ended in a tie, DELCO had several chances at the death to nick all three points.
The Under-15/16 game was one-sided for all 90 minutes. FC DELCO maintained the majority of the possession but was having trouble creating the necessary chances in the final third. FCDELCO broke through in the 60th minute with a terrific piece of combination play that was "All in the Family." Andrew Gonzalez penetrated deep into Real territory down the right side and whipped a ball into the area that seemed to have eyes. His twin brother, Danny Gonzalez, redirected the ball into the back of the net in a move that must have been repeated hundreds of times in the back yard. The game ended with Real never having had a shot on goal.
